Javadoc review
A free, open-source JDK tool for searchable Java API reference pages.

Javadoc is a command-line documentation generator for Java developers and library authors. Distributed with the Java Development Kit, it reads Java source files, class files, declarations, and documentation comments, then produces HTML API documentation through its standard doclet. The output covers packages, modules, classes, interfaces, constructors, methods, and fields, making Javadoc a natural fit for teams documenting Java APIs or implementation details within a JDK-based workflow.
Its strongest advantage is depth within the Java documentation model. Javadoc can generate searchable pages, API summary pages, code examples, and code snippets while checking documentation issues with DocLint. Pluggable doclets and custom taglets extend the output beyond the standard format, and the ToolProvider and DocumentationTool interfaces support programmatic integration. Teams can document individual source files, packages, or modules rather than relying on a single broad project output.
Javadoc is free and open source, but it is not a hosted documentation service: its published category profile identifies the hosting model as self-hosted. Teams therefore need to handle how generated HTML is published and maintained. It also does not provide verified OpenAPI import or an interactive reference and testing experience, so it is less suitable for multi-language API catalogs or teams that want browser-based request execution. Choose Javadoc for standard, searchable Java reference documentation generated alongside the JDK; consider another tool when OpenAPI workflows or interactive API exploration are central requirements.

- Creates searchable HTML pages with summaries and code examples
- Extensible through doclets, taglets, and programmatic interfaces
- Where it doesn't
- No verified OpenAPI import
- No interactive API reference or testing
- Self-hosted output requires teams to manage publication
