Our verdict on JamStation

JamStation is an open-source PlayStation 1 emulator implemented in the experimental Jam programming language. It is aimed at macOS developers building a small emulator and provides a focused route to running PlayStation software from the command line. The project uses SDL2 for rendering, accepts a PlayStation BIOS image, and supports either a game path, CUE/BIN disc images, or PS-X executables. Its documented targets include x86 desktop and macOS Arm systems.

The core feature set covers the main pieces needed for a compact PS1 emulation project. BIOS image loading handles the console firmware requirement, while CUE/BIN loading supports disc-image workflows and PS-X sideloading provides an executable-based option. Keyboard input can be mapped to a digital PlayStation controller, keeping control configuration straightforward for desktop development. JamStation also emulates a standard 128 KB PlayStation memory card, with save persistence through slot1.mcd. That combination makes the project more than a renderer: it includes loading, input, and save-state persistence at the memory-card level.

The trade-off is a deliberately narrow scope. JamStation is centered on PlayStation 1 emulation, macOS, command-line execution, keyboard-based digital controls, and a required BIOS image. It does not present a broader platform ecosystem or a larger library of console targets. Developers who want a small, inspectable open-source project with CUE/BIN support, PS-X loading, SDL2 rendering, and persistent saves should consider it. Users seeking a graphical setup experience, wider platform coverage, or controls beyond keyboard-to-digital mapping should choose a different emulator.
