IPFire is an open-source firewall operating system for home networks, offices, data centers, and cloud environments. It is designed for teams and technically capable administrators who want to manage a self-hosted network security platform through a web interface. The system provides stateful packet inspection, port forwarding, NAT, network zones, traffic shaping, web proxying, logging, monitoring, and VPN connectivity. It can be installed on bare-metal hardware, virtual machines, or supported cloud platforms.

The published plan structure is straightforward: IPFire is free software with no feature tiers or licence renewals. There is one plan, also named IPFire, rather than separate paid editions. Its feature set includes Suricata-based network intrusion prevention, IPsec, WireGuard, and OpenVPN connectivity, plus Red, Green, Blue, and Orange zones for network segmentation. The modular add-on system gives deployments room to extend the platform, while real-time monitoring and logging support ongoing administration. Because published throughput depends on hardware and configuration, capacity planning remains part of deployment work.

IPFire’s main advantage is breadth for a self-hosted firewall: it brings firewall inspection, VPN, segmentation, proxy filtering, QoS, IPS, monitoring, and add-ons into one operating system. It suits organizations that want open-source control and can take responsibility for infrastructure, updates, and configuration. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a conventional paid SaaS firewall, built-in AI features, or SSL inspection. Choose IPFire when flexible deployment and a broad network-security feature set matter more than a managed service model.
