Infinity is an open-source database for LLM and retrieval-augmented generation applications. It stores dense vectors, sparse vectors, tensors, full-text fields, and structured data, making it a fit for Python teams that need several retrieval methods in one system. Its search capabilities cover dense, sparse, full-text, hybrid, filtered, tensor, and multivector queries, with an HTTP API available for client-server deployments.

Its main strength is breadth within retrieval. Dense search supports HNSW and IVF indexes, while sparse search uses Block-Max Pruning indexing. Full-text search includes analyzers and BM25 scoring, and hybrid search can combine dense, sparse, and full-text retrieval. Secondary or full-text indexes support metadata and conditional filtering. Reranking options include reciprocal rank fusion, weighted sums, and ColBERT, giving teams multiple ways to combine or refine results.

Infinity can run as a standalone server or be embedded in Python applications. That split suits teams choosing between a local library-style deployment and a client-server architecture, while the Python SDK keeps the documented development path focused. The trade-off is operational: deployment is self-hosted through Docker, binaries, or Python embedding rather than a hosted cloud service. Choose Infinity when local control and wide retrieval coverage matter more than managed infrastructure or broader SDK language coverage; consider an alternative if those requirements are central.
