iCloud Photos stores photos and videos in iCloud and synchronizes them across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Windows PCs, and web browsers. It is aimed at Apple users who want one photo library available through the Photos app, iCloud.com, iCloud for Windows, and supported Apple platforms. Users can upload, view, download, organize, edit, and share media, including through Shared Albums and Shared Photo Library.

The plan structure starts with free iCloud storage providing 5 GB for photos, videos, backups, and device synchronization. Paid iCloud+ tiers provide 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, or 12 TB of storage. The 50 GB plan adds Private Relay, Hide My Email, and Custom Email Domain, while the 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB plans include family sharing. These storage limits apply to iCloud overall rather than to a Photos-only quota, so the available space also covers backups and other synchronized data.

Its strongest functional advantage is the combination of automatic synchronization and sharing. Shared Albums allow invited contributors, Shared Photo Library supports up to five other people, and users can crop, rotate, flip, and straighten photos before downloading or managing them. Windows File Explorer integration extends access beyond Apple hardware, while PhotoKit provides access to assets and collections in iCloud. Choose iCloud Photos if your library already centers on Apple devices and you want broad platform access around that library. A service focused on custom image domains or a general-purpose hosted-image upload API may be a better fit for publishing workflows.
