IBM PowerVM is a self-hosted server virtualization platform for IBM Power Systems. It creates and manages logical partitions for AIX, IBM i and Linux workloads, with support for workload consolidation, resource allocation and high-availability operations. The product is aimed at enterprise organizations running mission-critical workloads on IBM Power infrastructure, particularly teams managing IBM Power partitions across servers.

Its strongest technical depth is in partition mobility and resource control. Live Partition Mobility supports moving active or inactive logical partitions between servers, while micro-partitioning allocates processor resources to logical partitions. Virtual I/O Server provides virtualized storage and network I/O, and resource groups with affinity scoring support workload placement policies. PowerVM also includes Single Root I/O Virtualization and N_Port ID Virtualization for supported I/O configurations.

Management and ecosystem fit are central to the product. Administrators can work through the Hardware Management Console, PowerVM NovaLink or PowerVC, with NovaLink adding REST API and command-line access. OpenStack integration is available through PowerVM NovaLink services, and IBM PowerVC, HMC and OpenStack are listed integrations. According to IBM's product details, PowerVM is enabled through ordered PowerVM Editions activation codes and follows a contact-sales purchasing model. Choose it when your organization operates IBM Power Systems and needs partition mobility, virtual I/O and policy-based placement; organizations without that infrastructure should consider a hypervisor aligned with their server environment instead.
