IBM Cloud Satellite is a distributed cloud platform for organizations running applications across customer-owned infrastructure, public clouds and edge environments. It provides centralized management, secure connectivity to IBM Cloud, API-driven provisioning and multi-cluster configuration. Teams can use their own hosts while IBM manages the Satellite control plane and associated platform operations. The platform is particularly suited to hybrid enterprise Kubernetes environments that need consistent oversight across multiple locations.

The published plan is Satellite location, which includes location management and control-plane capabilities. Its starting price is 0.11, and the detailed pricing documentation describes the location fee as hourly. Satellite pricing is separate from the customer's underlying infrastructure and from charges for Satellite-enabled IBM Cloud services. This makes the cost structure relevant for organizations evaluating both the platform fee and the infrastructure required to operate each location. The plan supports persistent storage configurations, container workloads and edge database deployments.

Its strongest fit is an IBM-centered ecosystem. Integrations include IBM Cloud services, Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud, IBM Cloud Paks, IBM Cloud IAM and IBM Cloud Object Storage. Satellite also provides IAM integration and access policies for Satellite resources, centralized observability and management, and secure connectivity between customer infrastructure and IBM Cloud. Satellite Config adds multi-cluster continuous delivery, while managed Red Hat OpenShift clusters can run on customer-provided hosts. Choose it when distributed deployment, OpenShift, IBM services and centralized control are priorities; organizations seeking a narrowly focused edge runtime without these hybrid-cloud management requirements may prefer a simpler alternative.

IBM Cloud Satellite pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Centralizes management across on-premises, edge and public-cloud locations
    • Supports multi-cluster delivery with Satellite Config
    • Integrates with OpenShift, IBM Cloud services and IBM Cloud IAM
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires customer-provided hosts for managed OpenShift clusters
    • Underlying infrastructure costs are separate from Satellite pricing
    • The paid offering centers on location management and control-plane capabilities
