Hydra review
A focused, open-source CI system for teams building and testing Nix projects.

Hydra is an open-source continuous integration service for Nix-based projects. It evaluates jobsets, builds packages and other outputs, runs tests, tracks evaluations and build results, and exposes logs and artifacts. The product is aimed primarily at Nix and NixOS package developers who need CI aligned with Nix expressions, flakes, and configured NixOS build machines. Its web interface supports project administration, while the JSON API supports programmatic access.
Hydra follows a self-hosted open-source model rather than a priced hosted CI service. The customer deploys the software and provides the configured build machines, so the operating model suits teams that want direct control over their CI environment and are prepared to manage that infrastructure. Jobsets can be configured declaratively or imperatively, and builds can be triggered by input changes. Binary build caching through Nix substitutes can help projects reuse available build outputs within their Nix workflows.
The product’s strongest fit is a Nix-centered engineering organization that values native jobset evaluation, build scheduling, logs, result reporting, and Nix-aware caching in one system. Git and GitHub integrations support common source workflows, but Hydra remains specialized rather than a broad, general-purpose CI choice. Teams working primarily outside Nix or looking for a managed hosted service should choose another category option. Teams building Nix packages, NixOS components, or other Nix outputs should find Hydra’s focused model well aligned with that work.
