Hubble is an open-source, self-hosted observability platform for Kubernetes workloads. Built on Cilium and eBPF, it is aimed at cloud-native teams that need visibility into service communication, network flows, security-policy decisions, DNS activity, HTTP requests, and application-level network metrics. Its component set includes a CLI, server, metrics subsystem, relay, and a beta web UI, with support for Linux, macOS, Windows, web access, and an API.

The standout area is flow and service visibility. Hubble can present service dependencies through service maps, expose TCP, DNS, HTTP, and Kafka traffic, and provide Layer 3, Layer 4, and Layer 7 protocol visibility. The Hubble CLI adds flow observation and filtering, while Hubble UI supports visual flow analysis. Network and application metrics extend the view beyond individual events, and network-policy and security observability help teams examine how policy decisions affect communication. Hubble Relay adds access across multiple nodes or clusters.

Hubble fits teams that want a focused observability layer around Kubernetes networking and service behavior rather than a broad, general-purpose monitoring product. Its self-hosted deployment model suits organizations prepared to operate the required Kubernetes components and choose their own access patterns through the CLI, relay, UI, or API. Teams mainly seeking non-Kubernetes monitoring, or a product centered on a wider application-management scope, should consider a broader alternative. For Kubernetes operators investigating service flows, protocol activity, and policy behavior, Hubble’s open-source model and focused feature set make it a direct option.

Hubble pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Maps service dependencies and visualizes Kubernetes service flows
    • Covers TCP, DNS, HTTP, Kafka, and Layer 3–7 visibility
    • Relay, CLI filtering, metrics, and policy observability support analysis
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment places operation with the Kubernetes team
    • The Hubble UI is currently beta
    • Its focus is Kubernetes network and application observability
