Huawei Cloud Server Migration Service (SMS) is a web-based service for moving operating systems, applications, and data from physical or virtual servers to Huawei Cloud Elastic Cloud Server (ECS). It supports on-premises servers and servers in other clouds, with an agent installed on source servers and migration tasks configured through a web console. Windows, Linux, and API access are supported, making SMS suitable for infrastructure teams planning Huawei Cloud server migrations rather than broader application-modernization programs.

The service is free, but the migration process can use billable Huawei Cloud resources. Temporary EVS disks, ECS instances, snapshots, and applicable data-transfer services may incur standard charges. Its migration workflow includes feasibility drills for connectivity, permissions, and security-group settings; full source-server replication; incremental synchronization before cutover; and target-server launch. Disk and partition resizing, migration-rate controls, and bandwidth limiting help teams manage preparation and transfer conditions. Target-server cloning also supports pre-launch testing before production cutover.

SMS fits organizations already working with Huawei Cloud infrastructure, including EIP, VPC, EVS, CTS, IAM, IMS, OBS, and DNS. REST APIs plus Java, Python, and Go SDKs extend the service into scripted migration workflows, while migration logs can be uploaded to OBS. Its scope is narrower than a platform designed for application discovery or database modernization: dependency mapping and database migration are not part of the published capability set. Choose SMS for free server replication into Huawei Cloud; choose an alternative when application dependencies or databases require dedicated migration support.
