Higress review
A broad open-source gateway for Kubernetes routing, security, service traffic, and AI APIs.

Higress is an open-source API gateway for teams managing Kubernetes traffic, APIs, microservices, security controls, and AI gateway workloads. It can run independently with Docker or in Kubernetes, with web, API, and self-hosted access. The gateway supports Kubernetes Ingress and Gateway API routing, HTTP, HTTP2, HTTPS, GRPC, GRPCS, TCP, and Dubbo protocols. Its scope suits platform teams that want one gateway for conventional service traffic and newer model or agent interfaces.
Routing is only one part of Higress's offering. Authentication and authorization options include key, HMAC, JWT, Basic Auth, OAuth2, OIDC, External Auth, and OPA. WAF features add IP- and cookie-based traffic protection, while local and cluster-wide rate limiting provide configurable traffic controls. Teams can also transform request and response headers, queries, and bodies. Service discovery connects with Nacos, ZooKeeper, Consul, and Eureka, and HTTP-to-Dubbo conversion supports mixed protocol environments. Wasm extensions and an included management console provide another path for extending gateway behavior.
Higress is particularly relevant when AI traffic is part of the gateway design rather than an isolated add-on. Its AI gateway functions cover model APIs, MCP tools, token control, caching, and observability, alongside integrations with Istio, Envoy, and Kubernetes. The tradeoff is operational scope: an open-source, self-hosted gateway places deployment and administration with the adopting team, and its extensive controls may be more than a small API estate requires. Choose Higress for Kubernetes-centered teams that need security, service discovery, protocol conversion, extensibility, and AI gateway functions together; choose a narrower option when the requirement is limited to basic API routing.
Higress pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports Kubernetes Ingress and Gateway API routing
- Combines WAF, authentication, rate limiting, and transformations
- Adds AI gateway functions for model APIs, MCP tools, and token control
- Where it doesn't
- Requires teams to manage an open-source deployment
- Its broad feature set may exceed simpler gateway needs
- AI gateway capabilities are tied to Higress's broader gateway scope
