HashiCorp Enos review
A free, open-source choice for Terraform scenario and matrix testing in CI/CD.

HashiCorp Enos is a free, open-source framework for defining and executing quality-requirement scenarios with Terraform. It is aimed at teams testing HashiCorp products and complex distributed software, especially when infrastructure provisioning, deployed behavior checks, and cleanup need to be represented together. Enos uses HCL configuration through a declarative DSL, with scenario execution managed from a command-line interface. Its primary fit is Terraform-based infrastructure testing rather than a general-purpose testing tool for every cloud or infrastructure platform.
The standout capability is scenario variation at scale. Enos supports multi-variant scenario matrices, sampling for large matrices, and dynamic module selection during scenario generation. That combination can help teams express different infrastructure or software configurations without maintaining an entirely separate scenario for each variant. Terraform handles provisioning and teardown, while the Terraform provider for local and remote command execution supports actions around the deployed environment. This makes Enos a strong match for repeatable end-to-end checks where infrastructure state and software behavior must be evaluated together.
For delivery workflows, Enos integrates with GitHub Actions and is designed for CI/CD execution. Its ecosystem fit is clearest with Terraform and AWS, and the platform list covers macOS and Linux. The main boundary is its intended audience: the project is primarily for HashiCorp products and internal use, and users outside HashiCorp should expect no support. Choose Enos when Terraform-based scenario modeling, matrix testing, and infrastructure lifecycle control are central requirements. Teams seeking broad multi-cloud coverage, wider platform support, or an externally supported general infrastructure testing product should consider an alternative.
HashiCorp Enos pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Declarative HCL scenarios cover provisioning, testing, verification, and teardown
- Variant matrices, sampling, and dynamic modules support broad test coverage
- GitHub Actions integration enables CI/CD execution with Terraform and AWS
- Where it doesn't
- Primarily targets Terraform and AWS rather than broad infrastructure coverage
- Runs on macOS and Linux only
- Intended mainly for HashiCorp products and internal use, with no outside support
