Gulp review
A programmable, open-source choice for stream-based JavaScript task pipelines.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Gulp is an open-source JavaScript toolkit for automating repetitive development tasks and composing build pipelines. Developers and teams can define tasks in JavaScript or Node.js, read files with globs, transform them through streams and plugins, and write results to the filesystem. Its fit is strongest for programmable workflows where task composition and stream processing matter more than a configuration-only build system.
The published capabilities center on pipeline construction. Gulp supports sequential and parallel task execution, file watching with queued task execution, and incremental builds using last-run filtering. Built-in inline and external sourcemaps support source mapping, while TypeScript gulpfiles are supported through transpilation. This combination gives teams a direct way to express development workflows as JavaScript tasks and reuse plugin-based transformations across those workflows.
Gulp is free and open source, with no paid plans. Its scope is narrower when a workflow depends on bundling, tree shaking, or remote caching: those capabilities may be added through external tools or plugins rather than treated as native Gulp capabilities. Choose Gulp when your team wants composable, code-defined task pipelines with watching, streams, and incremental processing. Consider an alternative when the primary requirement is a broader integrated build system that includes those capabilities directly.
Gulp pros and cons
- Where it wins
- JavaScript-defined tasks with sequential and parallel composition
- Plugin-based stream transformations with file globs and filesystem output
- Watching, sourcemaps, TypeScript gulpfiles, and incremental builds
- Where it doesn't
- Bundling and tree shaking rely on external tools or plugins
- Remote caching is handled through external tools or plugins
- Requires programmable task definitions rather than configuration-only pipelines
