Gufw review
A free Linux desktop interface for creating and managing UFW firewall rules.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Gufw is a graphical configuration tool for Ubuntu’s Uncomplicated Firewall (UFW), aimed at Linux desktop users who want to manage firewall behavior without relying solely on command-line configuration. It supports enabling or disabling the firewall, creating TCP and UDP port rules, and applying Allow, Deny, Reject, or Limit actions. Preconfigured rules for common programs and services provide a direct starting point, while simple rule creation is organized around actions, protocols, and ports.
Its feature depth is focused but useful for local firewall administration. Gufw supports advanced rules based on IP addresses, UFW and Gufw logging controls, firewall profiles, and interface preferences. Routed rules are also available when IP forwarding is enabled, extending the tool beyond basic inbound and outbound port configuration. This makes it suitable for users who need more control than a minimal on/off firewall switch while still preferring a graphical workflow.
Gufw is free and open source, with a deployment model centered on local, on-premises use. Its scope is deliberately narrow: the product runs on Linux and does not provide centralized management, integrations, automation, or enterprise policy governance. Choose Gufw for straightforward firewall rule management on an individual Linux desktop or compatible local environment. Organizations looking for multi-system administration, cross-vendor support, automated policy handling, or centralized governance should choose a broader firewall management product instead.
