  • Where it wins

    • Adds stress, spectral, radial, and multilevel layout methods for networks
    • Includes sparse-stress and pivot-MDS layouts for large graphs
    • Works with igraph and ggraph in R visualization workflows
  • Where it doesn't

Our verdict on graphlayouts

graphlayouts is an open-source R package for analysts and developers who need ways to arrange network graphs for visualization. It extends igraph with additional layout algorithms, including stress-majorization, backbone, radial, spectral, multilevel, and UMAP-based options. The package is best suited to people already working with network data in R, often alongside igraph or ggraph; it is not a hosted dashboard or an end-to-end visualization application.

Its main strength is the range of layout approaches for different graph structures and analysis needs. Sparse-stress and pivot-MDS layouts address large graphs, while flexible radial layouts can organize nodes around focal points or centrality. There are also dynamic layouts for longitudinal network snapshots, plus spectral adjacency and Laplacian layouts. This breadth makes graphlayouts useful when a standard layout is not suitable, while keeping its purpose specific: it prepares graph arrangements rather than supplying a full workflow for exploring, presenting, and sharing visualizations.

The package is open source and distributed through CRAN, with source code maintained on GitHub under an MIT license. It integrates with igraph and ggraph, and its listed support channels are documentation and community support. Choose graphlayouts if your work is already in R and you need specialized options for positioning network nodes. Choose a broader visualization tool instead if you need a complete application, dashboarding, or a workflow that does not depend on R and graph-layout packages.
