Graphite is free, open-source software for storing numeric time-series data and rendering graphs on demand. It is designed for teams monitoring websites, applications, business services, and networked servers. The project combines Carbon metric-processing daemons, Whisper time-series storage, and Graphite-Web, a web interface and API for dashboards and graph rendering. It suits teams that want direct control over deployment and a focused system for metrics storage and visualization.

Its storage and ingestion model is flexible for a self-hosted time-series workflow. Configurable retention schemas allow multiple resolutions, while Plaintext, Pickle, and AMQP provide several ingestion paths. Tag-based series identification and querying complement Graphite target expressions and tag expressions. Carbon handles metric caching, and Whisper provides disk persistence. For larger deployments, remote Graphite servers and consistent hashing support clustered configurations with horizontal scaling.

Graphite’s main trade-off is its focused, infrastructure-oriented design. Deployment uses self-hosted components rather than a vendor-hosted SaaS product, so teams need to operate Carbon, Whisper, and Graphite-Web within their own environment. SQL is not supported, and the product does not provide verified integrations, which may make it less suitable for teams seeking a broad ecosystem or SQL-centered analytics workflow. Choose Graphite for straightforward metrics storage, retention control, dashboards, and graph rendering; choose an alternative when managed hosting, SQL support, or established integrations is central to the evaluation.

Graphite pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Configurable retention schemas support multiple data resolutions.
    • Accepts Plaintext, Pickle, and AMQP ingestion formats.
    • Supports dashboards, rendering APIs, caching, and clustered deployments.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment puts infrastructure responsibility on the team.
    • No SQL support for teams that require SQL-based querying.
    • The product does not provide verified integrations.
