Graphile Migrate is an open-source, SQL-based migration tool for PostgreSQL projects. Developers define changes in SQL files and use a command-line interface to test and apply them. It suits solo developers and small to mid-market teams that prefer PostgreSQL-native SQL over a custom migration language, especially when validating committed migrations is central to their workflow. It is self-hosted and supports Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Its development workflow is the main distinction: a shadow database checks migration consistency, while watch mode reruns the current migration when it changes. The tool applies committed migrations, tracks which have run, and hashes committed files to detect unintended edits. It also supports migration status checks, SQL includes and placeholders, and running SQL files against a database, including for seeding. These capabilities center on migration sequencing and development feedback, rather than broad schema governance.

Graphile Migrate is a fit for PostgreSQL teams comfortable working in SQL and managing a self-hosted CLI workflow. Its focused scope is also a boundary: it supports no other database in the listed capabilities, and automatic schema-drift detection and direct version-control integration are not part of its described feature set. Teams that need those capabilities, a change-review workflow, or a managed deployment service should compare alternatives. The project is open source with a free plan; its support channel is documentation, so teams seeking other support channels may want a different option.

Graphile Migrate pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Uses a shadow database to check migration consistency during development
    • Tracks and hashes committed migrations to help preserve their sequence
    • Watches and reruns the current migration as it changes
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supports PostgreSQL only
    • Does not provide automatic schema-drift detection
    • No direct version-control integration is documented
