Grafana Alloy review
A self-hosted collector for teams routing metrics, logs, traces, and profiles across observability backends.

Grafana Alloy is Grafana Labs’ open-source distribution of the OpenTelemetry Collector. It is designed for teams that need to collect metrics, logs, traces, and profiles from infrastructure and applications, then process and forward that telemetry to Grafana Cloud, self-managed Grafana components, or compatible backends. Alloy supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with deployment options that also include Docker and Kubernetes. Its strongest fit is for Grafana and Prometheus ecosystem teams that want one collector across multiple telemetry types.
The pipeline layer is the product’s central strength. Alloy supports OTLP compatibility and Prometheus-native collection, while its programmable, expression-based configuration handles transformation, filtering, routing, sampling, and contextual enrichment. Multi-destination fan-out allows telemetry to be sent to different backends, and clustering supports workload distribution and high availability. An embedded debugging and pipeline visualization UI helps teams inspect how telemetry moves through configured pipelines. These capabilities make Alloy suitable for more involved observability architectures rather than only straightforward collection and forwarding.
Its ecosystem fit is broad. Integrations include Grafana Cloud, Grafana Mimir, Grafana Loki, Grafana Tempo, Grafana Pyroscope, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, and HashiCorp Vault. Because Alloy is self-hosted, teams remain responsible for deploying and operating the collector in their own environment. Choose it when programmable pipelines, multi-destination routing, enrichment, clustering, and Grafana or Prometheus compatibility matter. Teams seeking a simpler collector with less configuration and infrastructure ownership may prefer a narrower alternative.
Grafana Alloy pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Collects metrics, logs, traces, and profiles in one pipeline
- Supports programmable transformation, enrichment, filtering, and routing
- Connects with Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, and major clouds
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires infrastructure and operational ownership
- Pipeline configuration uses a programmable expression-based model
- Its broad feature set may exceed the needs of simple collectors
