GPUStack review
An open-source control plane for managing GPU-backed inference across mixed infrastructure.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
GPUStack is an open-source GPU cluster manager for teams deploying, serving, governing, and scaling AI models across heterogeneous infrastructure. Its unified control plane covers on-premises servers, Kubernetes clusters, and cloud GPU resources, making it a fit for development teams, IT organizations, AI platform teams, and service providers running model-serving or GPU-as-a-Service environments. The platform is available through web, desktop, API, and self-hosted options, with support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The core product is open source and free. GPUStack Enterprise is presented through a contact-sales model. Across its deployment options, the product combines GPU instance provisioning, lifecycle controls, automatic model deployment, worker scheduling, and monitoring for GPU, VRAM, CPU, and RAM utilization. Quotas, user authentication, role-based access control, API-key management, and usage metering for tokens, GPU instances, and storage add governance for shared environments.
Its ecosystem is centered on model inference and infrastructure operations. GPUStack supports Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, Helm, Prometheus, Grafana, Higress, Hugging Face, and ModelScope, alongside inference engines including vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM, and llama.cpp. OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible APIs can help teams connect existing clients, while pluggable inference engines and custom backends support varied serving stacks. Choose GPUStack when multi-cluster coordination, distributed inference, and GPU governance are central requirements. Teams focused mainly on batch scheduling, or those needing only a narrow single-cluster tool, may prefer a more specialized option.
GPUStack pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Manages GPUs across on-premises, Kubernetes, and cloud environments
- Supports distributed inference and automatic GPU or worker scheduling
- Includes RBAC, quotas, metering, and OpenAI-compatible APIs
- Where it doesn't
- Its workload scheduler is oriented toward interactive inference
- The broad control plane may exceed the needs of single-cluster teams
- GPUStack Enterprise is presented through a contact-sales model
