Our verdict on Google Earth Pro
Google Earth Pro is a free downloadable desktop application for exploring high-resolution satellite imagery, 3D terrain, 3D buildings, Street View, and historical imagery. It is suited to educators, researchers, planners, analysts, and other users who need geographic visualization on a desktop. The application supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with capabilities for placemarks, paths, polygons, map annotations, measurements, image saving, map printing, tour recording, and movie creation.
The published Free plan includes the desktop application, GIS data import and export, historical imagery, and 3D terrain and buildings. Its geographic data workflow accepts GeoJSON, CSV, GeoTIFF, and KML/KMZ files, while measurement tools cover distances, areas, heights, widths, and elevation profiles. Users can also view 360-degree perspectives through Street View, save high-resolution images, and create presentations as recorded tours or movies. Support channels include documentation and community resources.
Google Earth Pro is a strong fit for geographic exploration and map-based communication, especially when satellite imagery, terrain, historical views, GIS files, or measurements are central to the work. It is less suitable for users seeking architectural rendering, VR or AR, or integrations beyond its import and export capabilities. The product is desktop-only, and Google states that Google Earth Pro for desktop will no longer be available for download after June 25, 2027. Users who need a narrow geographic visualization workflow can choose it; those needing architectural or immersive visualization should consider another product.
