Google Cloud Workflows is a fully managed orchestration service for defining and executing sequences across Google Cloud services, custom services, and HTTP APIs. It suits teams coordinating serverless applications, automated processes, IT operations, data pipelines, and machine-learning pipelines. Workflows support ordered steps, conditions, parallel execution, retry policies, callbacks, polling, and event-driven triggers. Teams can author workflows in YAML or JSON and deploy them through the Google Cloud console, command-line tools, Terraform, client libraries, or REST APIs.

Pricing is based on executed steps rather than seats or a conventional subscription plan. The Free internal steps and Free external steps tiers provide always-free allowances. Internal steps cost $0.01 per 1,000 steps per month, while external steps cost $0.025 per 1,000 steps per month. High-volume steps use custom pricing for internal or external steps beyond 100 million. This structure fits variable workloads and makes the service particularly attractive when execution volume stays within the free allowances or when a team wants usage-based billing.

The strongest ecosystem fit is Google Cloud: connectors cover BigQuery, Cloud Run, Cloud Run functions, Cloud Storage, Cloud Tasks, Dataflow, Firestore, Pub/Sub, Secret Manager, Spanner, Vertex AI, and other services. Eventarc can trigger workflows from audit-log, Cloud Storage, Firebase, and Pub/Sub events. Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring, and step-level execution history support operational review and troubleshooting, while configurable backoff and retry policies help manage transient failures. Choose Workflows for Google Cloud-centered orchestration with asynchronous callbacks and human interaction. Teams needing a portable, multi-cloud deployment model or visual workflow design should choose an alternative.

Google Cloud Workflows pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Ordered steps, branching, parallel execution, retries, and callbacks
    • Eventarc triggers plus connectors for major Google Cloud products
    • Step-level execution history, Cloud Logging, and Cloud Monitoring metrics
  • Where it doesn't
    • Cloud-only deployment limits portability across environments
    • Google Cloud-centric integrations may not suit multi-cloud teams
    • YAML or JSON authoring lacks a visual workflow builder
