Google Cloud Spanner is a fully managed distributed database for mission-critical applications that need relational semantics, strong consistency, and high availability at global scale. It supports GoogleSQL and a PostgreSQL interface, with regional, dual-region, and multi-region configurations. Automatic data splitting, synchronous replication, horizontal scaling, geo-partitioning, backups, and point-in-time recovery make it suited to applications that must operate across regions while retaining transactional consistency. It is paid software with a 90-day trial.

The published plans separate deployment scope and capability. Standard includes regional configuration and pay-as-you-use compute pricing. Enterprise adds additional multi-model and advanced capabilities while retaining regional configuration. Enterprise Plus supports regional, dual-region, and multi-region configurations and is the highest availability, performance, compliance, and governance tier. Pricing varies by edition, instance configuration, replicas, storage, replication, and network usage, so the product is better suited to teams that can manage consumption-based infrastructure costs than to buyers seeking a fixed subscription.

Spanner fits especially well within the Google Cloud ecosystem, with integrations for App Engine, Cloud Run, Cloud Run functions, Dataflow, Cloud Storage, Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Looker, and Data Agent Kit. Its scope also extends beyond a conventional relational database through graph, vector search, full-text search, Spanner Data Boost, and Spanner Omni deployment outside Google Cloud. Choose it for globally distributed workloads that need strong consistency, scaling, and multiple interfaces; choose an alternative if MySQL compatibility, a free plan, or simpler pricing is central to the purchase.
