Google Cloud Asset Inventory is a managed metadata inventory service for Google Cloud organizations, folders, and projects. It is designed for teams handling compliance tracking, audits, security reviews, change monitoring, and cost analysis across Google Cloud environments. Through its web and API access, teams can list and search resources, inspect metadata, analyze IAM and organization policies, and track relationships between supported assets. It is a focused choice for Google Cloud resource discovery rather than a broad, multi-environment asset management system.

The service supports several ways to work with inventory data. Custom queries and BigQuery SQL can query asset metadata, while exports send data to BigQuery and Cloud Storage. Pub/Sub feeds can monitor resource and policy changes, and asset create, update, and delete history is retained for up to 35 days. Integration with Google Cloud Console, gcloud CLI, Cloud Asset API, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Pub/Sub gives teams options for console-based review, command-line workflows, API access, analytics, storage, and event-driven monitoring.

Google Cloud Asset Inventory itself is free, while storage and other downstream service costs may apply. Optional OS inventory information for supported Compute Engine VMs adds operating-system and installed-package details when VM Manager is enabled and an OS Config agent is installed on supported VMs. The main trade-off is scope: organizations primarily operating in Google Cloud should find its discovery and policy capabilities aligned with their environment, while teams needing real-time querying or broader asset coverage should consider a different category fit.

Google Cloud Asset Inventory pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Searches resources across projects, folders, and organizations
    • Supports BigQuery SQL, exports, change feeds, and asset history
    • Analyzes IAM, policies, relationships, and supported VM OS inventory
  • Where it doesn't
    • Discovery is centered on Google Cloud resources
    • It is not intended for real-time asset querying
    • OS inventory requires VM Manager and an OS Config agent
