Google Artifact Registry review
A Google Cloud-native artifact repository with broad format support and usage-based pricing.

Google Artifact Registry is a managed Google Cloud service for storing and managing software packages, Docker and OCI container images, build dependencies, and other versioned artifacts. It is aimed at development and platform teams that need centralized repositories connected to Google Cloud build and deployment services. Standard repositories support private artifacts, while remote repositories cache upstream dependencies and virtual repositories combine multiple sources behind one endpoint.
Pricing is usage-based rather than organized into advertised paid tiers. The published plans include a free 0.5 GiB-month storage tier, with storage above that priced at $0.000136986 per gibibyte hour and billed monthly. Google Artifact Registry connects with Cloud Build, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run, Compute Engine, and App Engine, while also supporting tools and formats including Docker, Helm, Maven, npm, Python, Go, Debian, and RPM. Access is available through web and API interfaces.
Its feature set covers repository administration as well as artifact storage. Teams can apply project-level or repository-level IAM roles, configure public or private access, scan container metadata and vulnerabilities with Artifact Analysis, and set cleanup and retention policies. The breadth across Maven, npm, Python, Apt, Yum, Kubeflow, Go, and generic artifacts makes it suitable for mixed-language environments, while remote and virtual repositories help consolidate dependency access. Choose it when Google Cloud integration, fine-grained access control, and managed storage are priorities; consider another repository approach when a different platform focus or deployment model is required.
Google Artifact Registry pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports containers plus nine artifact types
- Remote and virtual repositories simplify dependency management
- IAM, vulnerability scanning, and cleanup policies are included
- Where it doesn't
- Web and API access may not suit teams seeking other interfaces
- Usage-based billing requires monitoring storage consumption
- Best fit is centered on Google Cloud workflows
