Our verdict on Go Help Desk

Go Help Desk is an open-source help desk and support ticketing system for teams that want to run support operations on their own infrastructure. It supports web access, self-hosted deployment, and API-based workflows. The product covers ticket submission and lifecycle management, staff groups, assignment, internal notes, public replies, email notifications, and customer portal access. Technical teams can classify tickets with categories, types, and items, then apply routing and optional SLA policies with response and resolution targets.

Its strongest fit is an organization that needs control over ticket behavior and integration points. Group-based assignment, automatic routing, configurable statuses, reopening, automatic closure, and category-scoped canned responses provide a structured workflow without limiting the system to a fixed process. SMTP, SAML 2.0 identity providers, webhooks, external APIs through plugins, and MCP clients extend the surrounding ecosystem. The REST API uses API-key authentication, while the MCP server provides AI assistant access to ticket operations. Sandboxed WebAssembly plugins add another path for customization.

The trade-off is that Go Help Desk centers on operational ticketing rather than broad customer self-service. Its feature set includes a customer portal and ticket automation, but the product’s focus is not a built-in help-center experience. Self-hosting also means the adopting team owns deployment and infrastructure decisions. Choose it when extensibility, local control, and configurable support workflows matter more than a fully managed SaaS model or a wider self-service suite. Teams seeking a conventional hosted help desk with deeper knowledge-base coverage should consider a different category fit.
