Our verdict on Gnuspeech
Gnuspeech is an open-source text-to-speech suite for developers, researchers, and technically oriented users exploring how speech is produced. Its articulatory vocal-tract model converts English text into speech while handling dates, numbers, abbreviations, punctuation, rhythm, and intonation. The software runs on macOS and Linux, and supports command-line or application-based output through gnuspeechsa. It is designed for programmable and experimental synthesis rather than hosted voice generation.
The main strength is its depth as a research tool. Gnuspeech includes a pronunciation dictionary with more than 70,000 English words, letter-to-sound rules for unknown words, and tools for creating and editing language databases with Monet. TRAcT provides interactive tube-resonance modeling, giving users additional control over the underlying speech process. These components make the suite a fit for English articulatory synthesis research, teaching, and experimentation with synthesis parameters.
Gnuspeech is less suitable for teams seeking a broad production voice platform. It is limited to English, does not provide an API, and lacks modern voice features. The GNU/Linux GNUstep port is described as functional but incomplete in some database-creation components, which may affect users who need a fully developed workflow for language-database work. Choose Gnuspeech when open-source access and articulatory control matter more than language coverage, cloud delivery, or contemporary voice options; choose an alternative when those capabilities are central.
