GNOME Builder review
A capable free IDE for Linux developers building GNOME and related applications.

GNOME Builder is an open-source integrated development environment for creating applications for the GNOME desktop. It is aimed at developers working with GTK+, GLib, GNOME APIs, and related technologies on Linux. The workspace combines syntax highlighting for many languages, side-by-side code editors, Git integration, project templates, diagnostics, profiling, and native-application debugging. It also supports integrated testing and is distributed primarily for Linux through Flatpak.
Build-system coverage is a major strength. Builder integrates with Autotools, Cargo, CMake, Gradle, Meson, Maven, Make, PHPize, and Waf, giving projects across several development workflows a common environment. Clang-, Python-, and Vala-based completion and diagnostics add language-aware assistance, while live previews for HTML, Markdown, reStructuredText, and Sphinx support documentation and interface work alongside code. Flatpak and jhbuild runtime support further align the environment with GNOME application development, and Arduino integration is available through arduino-cli.
Builder is a strong choice for Linux developers who want a free, open-source environment centered on GNOME technologies and broad build-system support. Its integrated profiler, native debugger, previews, diagnostics, and runtime support make it suitable for projects that need more than a basic editor. The main trade-off is platform scope: Linux is the supported operating system, so teams needing a cross-platform IDE should consider another option. It is also most compelling when the target ecosystem includes GNOME, GTK+, GLib, or related technologies rather than a desktop-neutral workflow.
GNOME Builder pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Broad integration with major build systems, including Meson, CMake, and Cargo
- Completion, diagnostics, previews, profiling, and native-application debugging
- Free and open source with Flatpak, jhbuild, Git, and Arduino support
- Where it doesn't
- Linux-only availability limits use across desktop operating systems
- Its strongest fit is GNOME and related technologies rather than every stack
- Arduino support depends on integration through arduino-cli
