gmusicbrowser review
A deeply configurable Linux music library manager for local collection-focused listening.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
gmusicbrowser is a Linux desktop music player and library manager for people with large local music collections. Its focus is browsing, organizing and playing audio through customizable player, browser, tray and fullscreen layouts. Users can filter libraries by artist, album, genre, year, label and folder, then manage queues and playlists while viewing artist and album artwork. It is suited to solo users and small teams that want a configurable desktop jukebox rather than a broad media application.
The project is free and open source, with a license model that does not require a paid tier. Its strongest area is library control: mass tagging and mass renaming support collection maintenance, while weighted random playback can use ratings and play history. The player supports Ogg Vorbis, MP3, FLAC, Opus, MPC, APE, M4A and WMA. Custom layouts, plugins, lyrics, desktop widgets and artwork browsing give the interface considerable room for personal organization. There are no AI features, keeping the product centered on manual library management and playback controls.
Platform fit is deliberately narrow. gmusicbrowser runs on Linux and is deployed as desktop software, with DBus providing a control and integration interface and Last.fm available through its plugin system. The project has GTK2 and GTK3 development branches, while the development page identifies version 1.1.99.1 as released in 2020 and the official forum has activity through 2026. Its documentation is oriented toward audio libraries, so users seeking general-purpose video playback, broader platform coverage or a wider media ecosystem should choose another product. Linux users who value filtering, tagging, layouts and playlist control should find its scope more suitable.
gmusicbrowser pros and cons

- Custom layouts, tagging, playlists, artwork and weighted playback
- Open-source desktop player with Last.fm plugins and DBus integration
- Where it doesn't
- Linux-only deployment limits platform flexibility
- Focused on audio-library management rather than general-purpose video playback
- Community support and release information reflect a dated project history
