Glycerine Workbench review
A focused research workspace for image annotation and IIIF publishing, not model development.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Glycerine Workbench is a hosted platform for researchers, curators and institutions assembling and interpreting digitised image collections. It brings together collection building, structured annotation, contributor collaboration and publication through IIIF manifests. The fit is strongest for scholarly projects, curatorial work and exhibitions that need annotations and public-facing research outputs; it is not designed as a general-purpose environment for developing or deploying machine-learning models.
The workflow centers on image sets sourced from uploads, IIIF sources and partner repositories. Researchers can annotate high-resolution images using shapes, tags, descriptions, links and locations, with preset or custom templates and fields. Multilingual interpretation and controlled vocabularies support structured scholarly description, while configurable contributor permissions help coordinate collaborative work. Selected image and annotation sets can be published with IIIF manifests, then exported or embedded. This makes the product a better match for organizing and presenting visual research than for broad data-science workflows.
The published plans show a Trial with GitHub support, followed by Individual at AUD 180 per year with GitHub support and Professional at AUD 480 per year with email support. Team costs AUD 960 per year and adds API access alongside email support. Classroom is AUD 1,250 per semester with email support. These tiers distinguish individual, team and classroom use, but the listed capabilities remain centered on image research. Choose Workbench when collection curation, annotation and IIIF publication are the main job. Teams seeking hosted notebooks, workflow automation, version control or model deployment should look for a different platform.
