GKE Multi-Cloud is Google Cloud’s managed Kubernetes offering for teams operating clusters across Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, and attached environments. It supports creating Kubernetes clusters on AWS and Azure infrastructure, attaching CNCF-conformant clusters, and managing them through the Google Cloud console, API, gcloud, and kubectl. Its fit is strongest for mid-market and enterprise organizations that want Google Cloud identity, centralized administration, and Kubernetes controls across providers.

Pricing follows a paid, pay-as-you-go model. The AWS and Azure plans base charges on cluster vCPUs under management. The Attached Clusters plan is listed at $0.10 per vCPU per hour for CNCF-conformant clusters. These service charges do not include the underlying AWS or Azure resource costs, so teams should evaluate both the management fee and their infrastructure spend. There is no free plan, and the published structure is more suited to ongoing production operations than casual evaluation.

The product’s strongest distinction is its Kubernetes focus. Administrators can use Google Cloud identity for cluster access, apply Kubernetes role-based access control, review audit logs for administrative and access activity, and send control-plane, node, and workload logs to Cloud Logging. Terraform support adds infrastructure provisioning for AWS environments. This makes GKE Multi-Cloud a practical choice for organizations standardizing Kubernetes governance through Google Cloud. Teams seeking a wider multi-cloud management layer beyond Kubernetes, or broader provider coverage than AWS and Azure plus attached clusters, should consider a more general platform.

GKE Multi-Cloud pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Manages AWS and Azure Kubernetes clusters from Google Cloud
    • Terraform provisions AWS infrastructure and Kubernetes clusters
    • Includes RBAC, audit logs, and Cloud Logging
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on Kubernetes rather than broader multi-cloud management
    • AWS and Azure resource charges are billed separately
    • No free plan; pricing is based on managed cluster vCPUs
