GitHub Enterprise Server Backup Utilities review
Free, self-hosted snapshots for GitHub Enterprise Server—with a retirement caveat.

GitHub Enterprise Server Backup Utilities are free, open-source tools for administrators who need backups of a self-hosted GitHub Enterprise Server appliance. They run on a separate backup host and transfer appliance data over SSH. The core commands divide the work: ghe-backup creates backups, while ghe-restore restores them. This makes the utilities relevant to organizations managing their own GHES environment, rather than teams looking for a general-purpose service for hosted Git repositories.
Their snapshot workflow combines full backups with incremental backups of Git repository data. The utilities support online backups without keeping the appliance in maintenance mode for the entire run, and snapshots store only newly added data. Administrators can keep multiple snapshots with configurable retention periods and schedule backup runs with cron or a similar scheduler. Restore targets include the original appliance or a separate GitHub Enterprise appliance, giving administrators a path to restore onto another appliance as well as back to the same one. These capabilities suit teams that need control over backup timing and retention; they still require a separate host and operational responsibility for the backup process.
The main decision point is lifecycle: GitHub says Backup Utilities will be retired starting with version 3.22 and recommends migrating to the built-in Backup Service for newer GHES versions. That caveat makes the utilities a fit for administrators whose current GHES setup calls for them, but a poor choice as the basis for a new long-term backup approach on newer versions. The published offering is a free utility, not a separately priced hosted plan, with documentation and ticket support channels. Choose it for its specific GHES snapshot and restore workflow when appropriate to your version; consider the built-in Backup Service for newer versions.
