githook-manager is an open-source Go command-line utility for configuring Git hooks inside a repository. It suits solo developers and small projects that want an interactive setup process for push-hook workflows. The setup command presents a configuration UI, writes YAML under .git/.githook-manager.yaml, backs up an existing hook, and installs a shell script wrapper in .git/hooks. This gives a repository a defined place for hook settings and preserves the prior hook during setup.

Setup is the product’s clearest strength. Rather than requiring manual file editing, the interactive command guides configuration and places the generated wrapper where Git expects hooks. The YAML file keeps settings in the repository’s .git directory, while the wrapper runs configured functionality. Installation uses Go’s go install command, so the workflow is most natural for teams already comfortable with Go tooling. The backup step is useful when introducing the manager to a repository that already has a hook.

Extensibility comes through Cobra commands: projects can add custom hook functions and register options that load through mapstructure-backed configuration. Git interaction is implemented with go-git, and package-manager integration is listed for the project. The exposed prepush command and push-stage focus make githook-manager a narrow choice for repositories centered on pre-push checks. Choose it when guided setup, YAML configuration, backups and Go-based extension matter more than broad lifecycle coverage or a large integration ecosystem; teams needing hooks across many stages should choose a wider-scope tool.

githook-manager pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Interactive setup backs up an existing hook before installation.
    • YAML configuration and a shell wrapper keep repository hook behavior organized.
    • Cobra commands, mapstructure options and go-git support extension.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Hook scope centers on push workflows rather than multiple lifecycle stages.
    • Configuration is stored inside each repository’s .git directory.
    • Installation uses Go’s go install command and a Go-based workflow.
