Git Large File Storage (Git LFS) is an open-source command-line extension and specification for managing large files with Git. It is designed for teams working with audio, video, datasets, graphics, and game-development files that are difficult to store directly in a Git repository. Git tracks lightweight pointer files, while the actual file contents remain on a configured LFS server. Standard Git workflows remain central for tracking, committing, pushing, fetching, and migrating files.

Its main strength is focused large-binary support. Teams can define file patterns with .gitattributes and git lfs track, migrate existing repository history with git lfs migrate, and retrieve or upload LFS objects through Git hooks and transfer protocols. Faster cloning and fetching can reduce the repository data downloaded, while the LFS locking API supports coordinated work on files that should not be edited concurrently. The API specification and reference server implementation also give teams a defined foundation for configuring LFS storage and transfers.
