GFXReconstruct review
A free, open-source choice for Vulkan and Direct3D 12 capture, replay, and GPU analysis.

GFXReconstruct is an open-source suite for capturing and replaying graphics API calls from games and other applications. It is aimed at game and application developers, graphics engineers, driver and GPU teams, QA groups, and researchers working with GPU workloads. The project records Vulkan and Direct3D 12 command streams into capture files, then replays them for debugging, performance analysis, optimization, regression testing, and platform bring-up. It supports Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android, with Meta Quest support marked experimental.
Its main strength is the breadth of its capture-file workflow. Beyond capture and replay, GFXReconstruct provides deterministic replay across hardware and platforms, capture-file inspection, compression and decompression, conversion to JSON Lines, SPIR-V shader extraction, and capture trimming and optimization. GPU workload isolation and bottleneck analysis extend the tool beyond basic replay, making it suitable for investigating graphics workloads and narrowing performance issues at the GPU level. These capabilities give graphics-focused teams a practical framework for debugging and comparing captured API activity.
GFXReconstruct is a focused graphics API capture and replay framework rather than a general-purpose profiler. CPU profiling is not provided, so teams seeking CPU or broader frame-time profiling should choose a tool that covers those areas. Direct3D 12 workflows are also tied to Windows, while Meta Quest and OpenXR support remain experimental. Choose GFXReconstruct when free, open-source Vulkan or Direct3D 12 capture, replay, file analysis, and GPU workload investigation are the priority; look elsewhere when CPU analysis or mature coverage of experimental platforms is central.
