Geminabox review
A focused, open-source registry for teams hosting private Ruby gems themselves.

Geminabox is an open-source, self-hosted RubyGems repository server for teams that need an internal home for private Ruby gems. It provides a web interface, standard gem push and yank APIs, Bundler dependency support, and the RubyGems compact index API. Deployment is aimed at teams that can operate their own package infrastructure, rather than organizations seeking a hosted registry managed by a vendor.
Its strongest fit is Ruby package distribution with familiar client workflows. Teams can publish gems through the standard gemcutter API, remove published versions through the corresponding yank operation, and support dependency resolution through Bundler APIs. Geminabox can also serve compact-index data and store gems and index data on configured server storage. Stored gem versions support overwrite operations, giving maintainers control over how repository contents are handled. The service can run behind Rack-compatible servers or in Docker, which gives self-hosting teams more than one deployment path.
The trade-off is a narrow scope. Geminabox is designed for Ruby gems and serves packages pushed to it; it does not provide upstream RubyGems proxying. That makes it a practical choice for an internal Ruby registry, but a weaker fit for teams that need one repository across several package ecosystems or a cache of upstream packages. Authentication is delegated to the web server or Rack middleware, so access control depends on the surrounding deployment. Choose Geminabox when self-hosted RubyGems storage, standard publishing APIs, and direct control of server storage are the priorities. Choose an alternative when hosted operations, upstream proxying, or broader ecosystem coverage matter more.
Geminabox pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports standard gem push and yank APIs
- Provides Bundler and RubyGems compact-index APIs
- Runs self-hosted with configurable server storage
- Where it doesn't
- Supports Ruby gems rather than multiple package ecosystems
- Does not proxy upstream RubyGems repositories
- Authentication depends on the web server or Rack stack
