GekkoFS review
Free, open-source storage aggregation for HPC teams that can work with ephemeral cluster data.

GekkoFS is a user-level distributed file system from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, designed for scientific applications and simulations running on high-performance computing clusters. It aggregates node-local storage across cluster nodes into a storage space for applications, with an option to isolate their I/O and reduce interference. HPC teams that need cluster-local storage during jobs are its clearest fit; it is not positioned as a general-purpose persistent file system.
Its configuration options address workloads with different I/O patterns. A client interception library provides access, and users can configure POSIX file-system semantics, simple-hash or guided data distribution, and N-to-N striped I/O or N-to-1 data distributions. Optional replication can be configured per client, and GekkoFS can report operation and data-chunk statistics. Metadata can use RocksDB or the optional experimental Parallax backend. These options give HPC teams ways to tune distribution and observe activity, while requiring choices suited to their applications and cluster setup.
The published plan information describes GekkoFS as free software for HPC applications, and it is open source and self-hosted. Users run daemons on cluster nodes, so deployment is tied to an HPC environment rather than a hosted service. Its file-system instances are ephemeral, typically lasting for the duration of an HPC job; data that must persist needs to be copied to a more permanent file system. Linux-only support further narrows the fit. Choose GekkoFS for job-scoped aggregation of node-local storage on Linux clusters; teams seeking persistent general-purpose storage or support for other platforms should look elsewhere.
GekkoFS pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Aggregates node-local storage across HPC cluster nodes
- Configurable POSIX semantics and striped I/O distribution options
- Optional per-client replication and operation statistics
- Where it doesn't
- Linux-only platform support
- Ephemeral instances mean persistent data must be copied elsewhere
- Specialized for HPC clusters rather than general-purpose file storage
