GeeXboX is a free, open-source embedded Linux distribution that turns compatible computers into home theater PCs or dedicated media centers. It is aimed at solo and small-team users who want a bootable playback environment rather than a conventional desktop application. The system boots from ISO or USB media and handles video, audio, images, DVDs, network shares, and internet streams across Linux, Windows, and macOS environments.

Its strongest area is playback breadth. GeeXboX supports MPEG, DivX, XviD, H.264, RealMedia, Windows Media, OggMedia, Matroska, MP3, Ogg/Vorbis, WAV, AC3, DTS, MusePack, and FLAC content. Subtitle support includes SubRip, SubViewer, Sami, SSA, VobSub, and closed captions. For network playback, it supports NFS, Samba, UPnP/DLNA, UPnP media-server discovery and mounting, SHOUTcast, and internet streams. Hardware-assisted video decoding through VDPAU, VA-API, and Crystal HD adds compatibility with supported hardware.

The trade-off is the specialized deployment model. GeeXboX makes sense when a computer is intended to boot directly into a media-center environment, but it is less convenient for users who want a standard desktop media player. DVD playback includes direct playback, while navigation-menu support is described as experimental. The project lists stable version 1.2.4 and an unstable 2.0-alpha2 release, and its current maintenance activity is unclear. Choose GeeXboX for free, bootable playback with broad format and network support; choose a conventional desktop media player if launching media from an existing operating system matters more.
