Our verdict on Gearboy

Gearboy is a free, open-source emulator for Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Super Game Boy software. It suits players who want broad platform access, save-state convenience and controller support, as well as technical users interested in debugging and cartridge compatibility. Standalone builds are available for Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD, with a libretro core for RetroArch and other supported platforms. An iOS app and user guide are also available in the repository.

Its feature depth goes beyond basic game playback. Gearboy supports save states with previews, rewind, battery-backed RAM saves, Game Genie and GameShark cheats, and modern game controllers. Local two-instance Game Boy link-cable emulation adds support for linked play on the same setup. For developers and researchers, the debugger includes breakpoints, disassembly and memory inspection, while an embedded MCP server provides AI-assisted debugging. These tools make Gearboy particularly suitable for examining software behavior, not just launching games.

Platform coverage is a major reason to consider it. The published platform list spans desktop, mobile, web, Raspberry Pi, tvOS, consoles, handheld systems and embedded targets, including RetroArch/libretro, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, Emscripten, OpenDingux, RetroFW and QNX. Choose Gearboy if maximum platform reach and technical tooling matter more than a narrow, minimalist emulator interface. Players seeking systems outside the Game Boy family, or online link-cable play, should choose a different emulator.
