Our verdict on GateSentry

GateSentry is an open-source HTTP/HTTPS proxy and DNS sinkhole for filtering traffic on individual machines or across local networks. It is aimed at technical users who need control over domains, URLs, keywords, MIME types, and access schedules rather than a simplified consumer filtering experience. Deployment options include Docker or binaries on Linux, macOS, and Windows, while Linux also supports transparent proxy mode. A web administration dashboard provides access to configuration, activity logs, and statistics.

Its main strength is the breadth of filtering controls in one self-hosted product. GateSentry can combine proxy rules with DNS sinkholing and external blocklists, then apply time-based or per-user schedules. Optional HTTPS SSL MITM inspection extends filtering into encrypted traffic, although that capability adds configuration and certificate-management considerations. Optional AI image filtering is available for teams that need an additional content-control layer. The result is a flexible rule system suited to network-wide filtering, privacy protection, parental controls, and blocking known-bad domains.

GateSentry fits organizations and technically capable households that are comfortable operating their own filtering service and tuning rules over time. Its dashboard supports practical monitoring through DNS and proxy logs and a statistics view, but the published activity-reporting scope is basic. Limited integrations also make it less suitable for buyers seeking a broad security ecosystem, centralized enterprise administration, or a polished managed service. Choose GateSentry when deployment flexibility, open-source access, and detailed proxy/DNS rules matter most; consider another option if low-maintenance onboarding, extensive integrations, or advanced reporting is the priority.
