Our verdict on GameChat
GameChat is Nintendo’s system-level communication feature for Nintendo Switch 2. It is designed for friends who want voice chat while playing, with support for up to 12 participants. Players can access it through the console’s C Button, use the built-in console microphone, share game screens in real time, and add video chat with a compatible USB-C camera. GameShare extends communication to supported games, while speech-to-text, text-to-speech, friend approval, reporting, and parental controls broaden its appeal for households and groups with accessibility or safety requirements.
Pricing is tied to Nintendo Switch Online membership rather than a standalone GameChat subscription. The Nintendo Switch Online Individual monthly plan costs $3.99 per user per month and includes GameChat access on Nintendo Switch 2. The annual Individual plan costs $19.99 per user per year and adds online multiplayer and Save Data Cloud. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Individual costs $49.99 per user per year and adds additional classic game libraries and included downloadable content. A 7-day trial applies to Nintendo Switch Online access. The published plans make GameChat most relevant for players already considering Nintendo’s online membership ecosystem.
The feature set is broad for console communication: up to four participants can share screens or participate in video chat simultaneously, and the built-in microphone reduces setup for voice calls. Video chat requires additional hardware, while every session depends on a persistent internet connection. GameChat’s platform fit is its defining boundary: it is a Nintendo Switch 2 system feature, without mobile apps or desktop positioning. Choose it for integrated communication on Nintendo’s console; choose an alternative when cross-platform access or broader device coverage matters more than console-native controls.
