Our verdict on FxRates
FxRates is a free, browser-based currency converter for travelers, consumers and small businesses. It converts amounts across 153 world currencies and works without an account or sign-up. The service runs in the cloud through a web browser, making it suited to users who want quick conversions, reference tables or rate comparisons from a desktop or mobile browser.
Its standout feature is rate-source transparency. FxRates draws live mid-market rates from seven providers: the European Central Bank, Visa, Mastercard, Wise, Revolut, OANDA and XE. Users can view a combined median rate or select one provider individually, then apply margin simulation for bank or card markups. Historical exchange-rate charts offer multiple time ranges, while cross-currency tables and printable cheat sheets support trip planning, budgeting and recurring reference work.
The trade-off is a narrow web-only experience. FxRates does not provide offline conversion, rate alerts or a dedicated mobile app, so it is less suitable for travelers who need access without connectivity or automatic monitoring of price movements. Users focused on comparing rate sources, estimating real-world markups and reviewing historical trends should find the feature set well aligned; those prioritizing mobile-native access, offline use or notifications should choose a converter built around those functions instead.
