Fusio review
A self-hosted API platform with gateway, portal, analytics, security, and monetization tools.

Fusio is an open-source API management platform for developers and organizations that need to build, expose, secure, document, monitor, and monetize APIs. Primarily self-hosted, it provides an administrative backend, an API gateway for database and microservice backends, a developer portal, analytics, OAuth2 authorization, scoped access control, schema validation, API versioning, and SDK generation. It is a strong fit for teams that want control over their API stack and need product capabilities around publishing and monetization rather than only traffic routing.
Fusio's pricing model is open source. Its monetization features let an operator configure API plans, quotas, and subscription billing for that operator's APIs; these are not Fusio product subscription tiers. The platform connects with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, HTTP/REST, SOAP, AMQP, Elasticsearch, Amazon Web Services, Stripe, PayPal, and SMTP. That combination supports API backends, infrastructure, payment collection, messaging, and developer-facing operations, while the portal includes documentation, testing tools, and API keys.
The standout depth is the combination of API product management and extensibility. Teams can define custom actions in PHP, JavaScript, Python, and Java/Groovy, generate SDKs in multiple languages, apply scoped OAuth2 access, and connect AI agents or MCP integrations. Fusio should appeal to open-source API builders with monetization needs and the technical capacity to operate a self-hosted platform. Teams looking for a managed service, conventional paid tiers, or deployment with less platform ownership should consider a different API management approach.
Fusio pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Combines gateway, portal, analytics, OAuth2, validation, and versioning
- Supports plans, quotas, and subscription billing for API monetization
- Connects databases, services, queues, payment tools, and cloud infrastructure
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires technical ownership of the platform
- Custom actions are limited to PHP, JavaScript, Python, and Java/Groovy
- Open-source delivery may not suit teams seeking managed product tiers
