  • Where it wins

    • Freeform 3D topology optimization with SIMP and SEMDOT methods
    • Supports multiple force cases, supports, and three-direction symmetry controls
    • Generates structured hexahedral meshes from STL domains
  • Where it doesn't

    • Requires a MATLAB-based workflow rather than a hosted application
    • Focused on topology optimization instead of broader generative design workflows
    • Founded in 2024, so its project history is relatively recent

Our verdict on FreeTO

FreeTO is an open-source MATLAB code for initializing, optimizing, and post-processing freeform 3D topology optimization problems. It is aimed at researchers, engineers, educators, and MATLAB users studying material distribution within STL-based domains. The workflow accepts STL geometry and load-region inputs, creates a structured hexahedral mesh, applies support and force conditions, and produces optimized-topology visualizations. Optional STL output supports continued work with the resulting geometry.

Its strongest capability is the range of controls available within a focused topology-optimization workflow. Users can choose between SIMP and SEMDOT methods, configure multiple force cases and load magnitudes, define support and boundary-condition regions, set volume-fraction parameters, and apply symmetry-plane controls in up to three directions. That combination makes FreeTO suitable for experiments that need more variation than a single-load, single-condition example. The STL-driven process also gives it a clear fit for studies that begin with existing geometry rather than a purely parametric model.

FreeTO is best suited to people comfortable working with MATLAB code and managing a research-oriented optimization process. Its open-source format supports inspection and adaptation of the workflow, while its 2024 founding makes it a newer project for teams evaluating long-term maturity. The product is a focused tool rather than a broad generative-design environment, with no AI features described. Choose it for freeform 3D topology-optimization experimentation, especially when SIMP, SEMDOT, mesh generation, multiple loads, and symmetry controls matter. Choose an alternative if you need a hosted application, a wider platform ecosystem, or generative-design capabilities beyond topology optimization.
