Our verdict on Plato

Plato is Sandia National Laboratories’ optimization-based design software for engineers and researchers working with physics-driven design problems. It generates topology- and shape-optimized designs by connecting mathematical optimization with physics codes, geometry, meshing, and simulation workflows. Its documented applications include compliance minimization, stress-constrained mass minimization, brackets, fixtures, lattice research, and additive-manufacturing design. The product is delivered as a Linux command-line application, making it a strong fit for teams conducting open-source HPC topology research rather than users seeking a general-purpose visual design environment.

The published licensing options make Plato accessible for open-source work, while the no-fee Government Use license applies to eligible U.S. government agencies and contractors. The open-source version has a limited set of objectives and constraints, and access to the licensed download requires a license agreement. Platform fit is focused: Plato supports Linux and self-hosted deployment, with integrations for Sierra, Plato Analyze, Engineering Sketch Pad, and CUBIT. A separate graphical interface for selected applications is under development, so teams should expect the command line to remain central to the current workflow.

Its strongest differentiator is the breadth of engineering optimization methods available within a physics-coupled workflow. Plato covers compliance and mass objectives, parameterized-CAD shape optimization, automatic mesh pruning and refinement, optimization restart with parameter adjustment, multi-material structural topology optimization, and conformal lattice and metamaterial design research. HPC-enabled distributed-memory optimization extends that focus to research workloads that require parallel execution. Choose Plato for open-source, simulation-connected optimization on Linux; choose another product if you need broad desktop platform coverage, a mature graphical interface across applications, or unrestricted objectives and constraints in the open-source edition.
