Our verdict on Free File Eraser
Free File Eraser is a Windows desktop utility for permanently deleting sensitive files and folders. It is aimed at individuals and companies handling passwords, personal information, financial records, and other confidential material. Users can select individual files, folders, and subfolders in the application or drag them into its window. The tool also handles Recycle Bin contents and can overwrite unused hard-drive space.
Its strongest point is the range of deletion controls available at no cost. The single Free File Eraser plan is 100% freeware and includes quick, DoD 5220.22-M, and Gutmann erasure methods. Users can also customize the number of deletion passes, giving the utility a more configurable approach than a basic delete command. For routine file and folder shredding on Windows, that combination keeps the product focused and practical.
The trade-off is scope. Free File Eraser is Windows-only and does not include scheduling or full-drive wiping, so it is better suited to selected files, folders, Recycle Bin contents, and unused-space cleanup than to broader disk-management workflows. Choose it if free, local file shredding with multiple erasure methods meets your needs. Look elsewhere if you need macOS or Linux support, automated schedules, or a tool designed to wipe entire drives.
