FoxTrot Search is a macOS document-search application for individuals, professionals, workgroups, and organizations managing large document collections. It indexes PDFs, office documents, email, web pages, media, messages, contacts, and other supported formats from folders and volumes. Searches can cover document content, metadata, filenames, authors, tags, and keywords, with filters for relevance, age, location, type, extension, and author. The iOS app serves as a companion for FoxTrot indexes, while the primary search application is for macOS.

The licensing structure scales by search scope and collaboration needs. FoxTrot Personal Search costs $35 one-time and includes a single index, content and metadata search, and built-in previews. FoxTrot Professional Search costs $120 one-time and adds multiple indices, advanced search criteria, and advanced in-document searching. The 5-user Professional edition costs $240 one-time and adds shared-folder searching and workgroup use. FoxTrot Search Server costs $480 one-time for 10 users and adds NAS and network searching, a shared index, and Search Server capabilities. A 60-day free trial is available, and checkout may use local currency with taxes applying.

Search depth is the main differentiator. FoxTrot can preview documents, highlight multiple search terms, support proximity searches, and filter results across varied content types. Professional 8 or later adds OCR conversion for scanned PDFs and images, while integrations with Apple Mail, iMessage, Contacts, macOS Spotlight metadata importers, and Quick Look extend its reach across a Mac workflow. Network drives, NAS locations, connected or removable volumes, and synced index files are supported in the relevant editions. Choose FoxTrot for detailed macOS search across mixed content and, at higher tiers, shared or network collections. Users needing only basic single-index searching should stay with Personal Search; those who do not work in the Apple ecosystem should look elsewhere.
