Fluentd review
A mature, flexible log pipeline component for teams managing their own infrastructure.

Fluentd is an open-source data collector for engineers building self-hosted log pipelines. It brings collection, parsing, filtering, buffering, routing, and delivery into a pluggable pipeline that can handle files, network events, structured records, and unstructured logs. The project supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted deployment, making it suitable for teams that want to control where log processing runs and how records move between sources and destinations.
Its main strength is breadth within the pipeline layer. Fluentd can tail files with rotation and position tracking, accept HTTP, TCP, UDP, syslog, forward, and Windows Event Log inputs, and parse formats including JSON, regexp, Apache, Nginx, syslog, CSV, TSV, LTSV, and multiline records. Field-based filtering and record transformation help shape events before delivery, while plugin-based routing can send data to multiple destinations. Memory and file-based buffering add options for handling delivery conditions, and Amazon S3 output supports time-sliced files and compression options. Custom plugins extend the system with additional parsers, filters, inputs, and outputs.
Fluentd is a focused infrastructure component rather than a complete log-management workspace. It does not present itself as a combined search, dashboard, and alerting platform, so teams seeking those functions should pair it with other systems or choose a broader alternative. The self-hosted model also places deployment, configuration, plugin selection, and ongoing operations with the adopting team. Choose Fluentd when flexible collection and routing are the priority, especially across varied environments and formats. Look elsewhere when the requirement is a hosted experience centered on ready-made investigation, visualization, and alerting.
Fluentd pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Broad inputs, parsers, filters, routing, and output plugins
- File and memory buffering supports controlled event delivery
- Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted deployments
- Where it doesn't
- Requires self-hosted deployment and operational ownership
- Does not provide a complete search and dashboard experience
- Alerting is outside its core pipeline function
