Our verdict on Flowing

Flowing is a desktop writing environment for researchers and students working on literature reviews, thesis chapters, and other long-form academic writing. It combines a local PDF library with on-device indexing, rich-text and LaTeX editing, live PDF preview, keyword recall, contextual AI questions, evidence-backed polishing, continuation, and citation insertion. References can be managed through a sidebar and @ citation insertion, while manuscripts can be imported or exported as DOCX or PDF. Flowing runs on Windows and macOS and is aimed at writers who want their source library close to the drafting process.

The published plans make the free tier a practical starting point: it includes the local PDF library, rich-text and LaTeX editing, unlimited manual keyword search, limited AI features, and citation support. Go costs $5 per month and adds 1M AI tokens with higher limits for Recall, Ask, polish, and continuation. Pro costs $10 per month, provides 4M AI tokens, and adds unlimited Evidence Cards. Pro+ costs $30 per month, includes 16M AI tokens, strongest model options, higher-volume AI features, and unlimited Evidence Cards. One-time token packs cost $5 for 1M, $12 for 3M, or $35 for 10M tokens.

Flowing’s main distinction is the connection between imported PDFs and writing assistance. Keyword recall can surface passages, selected draft or library content can inform AI questions, and polishing is designed to remain evidence-backed. Local files remain on the device by default, while selected context for AI requests uses cloud processing. Zotero and BibTeX support strengthen its fit for academic reference workflows. Choose Flowing if your priority is research-grounded drafting on a Windows or Mac desktop; choose another writing tool if you need broader platform coverage or a collaboration-centered workspace.
