Flent review
A focused open-source toolkit for repeatable bufferbloat and responsiveness tests.

Flent is an open-source, Python-based network benchmarking tool for engineers, researchers, and technically minded teams that need repeatable active tests. It runs predefined scenarios against one or more hosts, generates TCP, UDP, and ICMP traffic, and combines measurements from multiple benchmarking tools. Its strongest fit is bufferbloat and network responsiveness analysis rather than general-purpose uptime monitoring or hosted network observability.
The testing workflow is broad for a desktop utility. Flent wraps netperf, iperf, ping, fping, irtt, and D-ITG, then aggregates and plots the resulting measurements with matplotlib. It captures metadata and secondary host statistics, supports a graphical dataset browser, and exports results as JSON, CSV, Org-mode tables, and plots. Batch files add a practical path to repeated runs, while predefined tests reduce the work required to construct common bufferbloat, TCP, UDP, and latency scenarios.
Flent is distributed as local software for Linux and macOS, so it suits users who can manage a Python environment and the required command-line tools. The desktop deployment and active-test model are useful for controlled benchmarking, troubleshooting, and comparison work, but less suitable for teams seeking a hosted dashboard, always-on monitoring, or recurring tests managed as a service. Choose Flent when detailed, repeatable measurements and flexible exports matter most; consider another network testing product when broader platform coverage or service-style monitoring is the priority.
Flent pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Predefined tests target bufferbloat, TCP flows, UDP traffic, and latency
- Aggregates TCP, UDP, and ICMP results into plots and structured exports
- Batch files automate repeatable runs and metadata capture
- Where it doesn't
- Desktop deployment is limited to Linux and macOS
- Requires local Python software and supporting benchmarking tools
- Does not provide service-style monitoring or recurring-test scheduling
