Flake is an open-source Go CLI and GitHub Action for detecting and diagnosing flaky tests. It is intended for software engineering teams working with pytest, Jest, or Vitest that want local analysis across Windows, macOS, and Linux. The tool repeatedly runs test suites, calculates failure rates, and examines controlled changes to test order, seeds, parallelism, workers, time zones, locales, and temporary directories. Its local-first design keeps incidents in SQLite and does not require a web dashboard, server, cloud service, authentication, or source-code uploads.

Its strongest area is controlled reproduction. Flake can minimize reproducible failures through delta debugging, analyze suspected causes deterministically from observed evidence, normalize failure signatures, group incidents, and produce exact replay commands. Configurable replay runs help turn an intermittent failure into a repeatable investigation. For teams whose main problem is understanding why a test fails under particular execution conditions, this is a focused feature set. The GitHub Action extends that workflow with Markdown, JSON, and SARIF reports, while GitHub Actions is the listed integration.

Flake is less suited to teams seeking a broader operational workflow around flaky tests. There is no quarantine workflow, and the product is centered on local incident storage rather than a shared dashboard or cloud service. It also does not include AI features. Choose Flake when developers need open-source, cross-platform reproduction, minimization, cause analysis, and replay for pytest, Jest, or Vitest. Consider an alternative when centralized collaboration, additional integrations, or automated quarantine management is more important than controlled local diagnosis.

Flake pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Controlled variation isolates order, seed, locale, and parallelism effects
    • Delta debugging minimizes reproducible failure conditions
    • Replay commands and SARIF, JSON, and Markdown reports support investigation
  • Where it doesn't
    • No quarantine workflow for automatically managing flaky tests
    • GitHub Actions is the only listed integration
    • Local SQLite storage replaces shared dashboard or cloud collaboration
